After giving birth, I felt a distinct need to bond and engage with my baby. I also felt a need to get moving and to reconnect with my core. Now as a yoga and fitness teacher, I've been pursuing certifications to offer these things to other women after they have their babies. I'm certified in both a Yoga Bonding postnatal yoga class and a Mamalates birth and core recovery class. I also offer workshops that blend these two classes.

In both Mamalates and Postpartum Yoga, the classes are supportive and non-judging, a place to enjoy some rejuvenating yoga or pilates-based core strength and playtime with your baby to build a strong bond of trust and security surrounded by warm, welcoming energy.

Mamas are free to nurse, bottle feed or change a diaper as needed, at any time in class, on your mat. Classes are
open to moms who are feeling fine post-partum and have permission for movement, stretching, and strengthening from their doctor or midwife. (Moms who had a cesarean birth typically wait until 8-10 weeks, again per your doctor or midwife’s guidance.) Babies six weeks and older enjoy the class and interaction usually up until they are crawling.

What to expect in a Postpartum Yoga class:

Postpartum Yoga is a 60 minute class which provides a safe, supportive space to come to your mat with your baby for yoga; nurturing your child while taking care of yourself. The class begins with infant massage and floor poses, moves into a yoga sequence for mom and then standing     postures with baby. Class ends with a hip strengthening series to tone and rebuild muscles that may have changed during pregnancy and birth. At the end of class in resting savasana (and the sidelying core/hip work), you'll be able to nurse and snuggle with your baby.

The Mamalates method is an OB/GYN endorsed perinatal restorative, Pilates-based exercise method that focuses on alignment, stability and safely reclaiming your core: all while working out with baby! Mamalates is a 60-75 minute class that will guide you through stretches, exercises and strengthening moves to target alignment of the hips, pelvis, ribs and shoulders. Mamalates class will also focus on stability work in the hips and bring you back into connection with your core muscles and your pelvic floors. Mamalates is safe for women with diastasis recti.
